Usually, the newer models of the PlayStation 3 have a way to connect to your WiFi. If this is not the case, I will also explain how you can connect the PS3 to the PC and use the LAN connection for this. We also have a new article which explains how to play ps4 on laptop. If you prefer older games, you can use the emulator PCXS2 to play PS2 games right from your laptop. Slowdowns are sometimes a problem so we have a guide on How to Make pcxs2 Run Faster on a Laptop which should sort you out. Go to Settings in the PS3 menu and scroll down to Network Settings. Go to Internet connection settings and choose your wireless router from the list of available connections. If a connection is not coming up, you can also scan for existing networks or enter the SSID (Service Set Identifier) of your router manually (find out the SSID – this is how it works). Select the appropriate encryption and enter the key. If the router is secure, you will need to enter your password. Your internet connection in the list of network settings will say “Enabled” once you are connected. You will get the IP address, DNS settings and MTU value automatically. This step eliminates DHCP host names and proxy servers and activates UPnP (Universal Plug and Play). Be aware that your browsing history will be stored on your router. If this is an issue for you, then we have a guide on how to view your wifi router history (and delete it!).

Make sure the PC and PlayStation 3 are connected to your router via the Ethernet cable. If it is a newer router, it should automatically recognize the PS3 via DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), add it to the network and assign an IP address. If this does not happen automatically, use the network wizard to find new devices and add the PS3.

Connect the PS3 Controller to your Laptop

If you have a PS3 controller and want to play games on your PC, you do not need to buy any additional accessories. You can easily use the PS3 controller for gaming on the PC. All that is needed is some additional software (ScpToolkit driver) that makes the controller compatible with your Windows, a USB port, and a USB cable that goes into the controller on one end and your laptop on the other. First, unplug the PS3 controller from the PlayStation and turn it on by pressing the PS button in the center. Plug in the USB cable, since the controller is not supported automatically, Windows will not download the drivers by itself, you will have to install them manually. Open the ScpToolkit website to install the tool for free. When the installation is finished, start the “ScpToolkit Driver Installer” program. Check the box next to “Select DualShock 3 controller for installation”. You can uncheck “Install DualShock 4 Controller” if you do not want to install a PS4 controller as well. Activate “Wireless Controller” and finally click on “Install” in the lower right corner. There you go! Now your controller is going to work on your computer as well.

Set up your Laptop as a media server for the PS3

For your PC to serve as a media server for the PlayStation 3, you will need the latest Windows Media Player on the computer. The PlayStation must be switched on and connected to the network. Selected in the menu “streaming” option enable media streaming, click the checkmark next to Allow devices to play media automatically. Now Switch to your PlayStation 3, under Settings, go to Network Settings and allow the connection to the media server. Under the individual media offers photo, video, and music, click on search media server. The files must be on your computer in the respective libraries. Now you can stream the data from the media player to your PS3 while the PC is running. Not all formats are available so you may have to do some conversions. If you have difficulty getting this to work, then it may be better to use a chromecast and cast Windows Media Player to your Chromecast-connected TV.

Set up the PS3 correctly

In addition to the correct connection, you should also consider the position of the PS3. For example, it is particularly important that there is some free space around the PS3 so that the console can be adequately ventilated and does not get too hot. In addition, it should not be tilted or moved during operation so that your games can run properly.
